Smart Art Signs is an independent family-run business based in Castlebar, County Mayo. We provide a wide range of signs, graphics and banners to local businesses and organisations, both large and small. As one of the longest-established sign making businesses in the west of Ireland, we have almost 40 years of experience in design, production and installation.

Smart Art Signs was founded in 1983 by Robert Gibbons, who previously worked in Cashin Print Castlebar. Initially, signs were produced by hand, using traditional techniques, and as the business grew, so did the variety of technology and materials available to signmakers.

Thanks to our customers, we have grown over the decades and invested in new technologies such as computers and vinyl plotters in the 1980s, thermal foil printing machines in the 1990s, and large format solvent ink printers during the 2000s. Today, Smart Art continues with Andrew Gibbons, the second generation of the Gibbons family, in the workshop.

We continue to offer a wide variety of signage options, and are proud to work with many local businesses, organisations, sports clubs, agencies and individuals around Mayo and beyond.

Some Of What We Do

FAQs

We get asked this a lot, and the answer is; it depends! Almost every sign or vehicle graphic is different, and its price will depend on its size, the materials used, the time needed to design and manufacture it, and installation. So, if you have something in mind, get in touch with all the details, and we will get back to you with a quote. We also have a number of standard signs available for sale in our online shop here.

Almost every kind! We make temporary signs, indoor signs, exterior signs, shopfronts, vehicle graphics, window graphics, illuminated / LED signage, floor markings, and magnetic signs. To get a better idea of our range, and maybe get a little inspiration, take a look at our gallery of previous projects here.

Much like Dolly Parton, we work 9 to 5 (what a way to make a living!) However, because signs don’t install themselves, we can be out of the workshop several times during the day, so we could miss you. Best to give us a call ahead of time, to make sure we’ll be here.

We’re based in Castlebar, and usually cover County Mayo, as well as parts of Sligo and Galway. However, we do love seeing our beautiful West of Ireland, and our work in the past has taken us to places as diverse as Clifden and Elphin, and from Killybegs to Kinvarra!

You can contact us via our website contact page, by phone, or by email. We often spend time out of our workshop on site, usually on a ladder or concentrating on a piece of work, so if we don’t answer the phone, please leave a message or send an email – we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Yes! If you don’t have a prepared artwork, we can create a design for you, and we’ll offer a mock-up of what the sign or graphic will look like. We can also supply your design in a digital format for use elsewhere. The time involved in designing will be factored into the final price.

No problem! If you have a design already created, correctly scaled and ready to print, send it to us! We can accept .pdf files (with outlines), .eps and high quality .jpeg images, depending on the nature of the job. Please ensure images / designs are suitable for CMYK printing. We’ll proof your image for suitability before proceeding. Please note, designs created on Canva and similar apps are usually lower resolution, and not suitable for printing.

We’ll always do our best to work to deadlines. While we can produce urgently-needed signage with very short notice, we aim to produce most signs in 3-7 working days, with larger or more complex jobs such as illuminated or built-up 3D lettering taking longer. Outdoor installations are always at the mercy of our Irish weather, which can cause delays! Please contact us as early as possible when planning your project.

Of course! We’re happy to offer tips on how to achieve the best installation by yourself.

Yes! We produce all our signs, plotted vinyl, and printed graphics in our workshop here in Castlebar. We occasionally acquire some items that need very specialised production techniques or materials from trusted suppliers elsewhere in Ireland, who we have worked with previously.

Again, it depends! Some materials such as corriboard, are meant for temporary use and will typically last for approximately 12 months. Others, such as aluminium, will last much longer. We’ve seen some vehicle graphics last for over a decade, and some of our signs last for 25 years! We use the best materials available within your budget, and with a bit of care, many signs and graphics will have a long life. Our general advice is to clean your signs and graphics occasionally with a mild detergent, and to avoid high-pressure / high-temperature powerwashing, particularly on vehicle graphics.
